ABA condemns Fijian military government moves to usurp rule of law

The President of the Australian Bar Association (ABA), Mr Tom Bathurst QC said today: “The ABA condemns in the strongest terms the latest attempts by the military government in Fiji to usurp the rule of law.”

ABA expresses grave concern for Fiji
Tuesday, 14 April 2009

The Vice President of the Australian Bar Association, Mr Peter Riordan S.C., said today: “The pretence that the military junta of Frank Bainimarama was acting in accordance with the constitution has been removed by the declaration of the Fiji’s Court of Appeal last Thursday."

The Australian's reporting today on the Australian Bar Association’s 2009 conference in Strasbourg and London.
 
The Australian devotes much of today’s coverage of legal affairs to criticising the forthcoming ABA conference.
 
The criticism in The Australian was essentially a rehash of what has been said by it about earlier ABA conferences and entirely ignores the professional benefit derived from such conferences.
